So Who Was Right With E3's Presentation?

By Ludwig Von Koopa - Not Nintendo.

According to Reggie Fils-Aime of Nintendo of America, "We're always looking for new ways to surprise and delight." True, but this was describing Nintendo's E3 presentation. "But it will be different, and it will be better." Except... it wasn't.

Just compare the live reactions for the best E3 press conference, Sony's. And for another perspective of how to play the crowd with a lack of content, look at Ubisoft's. Now, Nintendo did have content. It wasn't surprising or anything, but nonetheless. That's why I declared them the winner of this year's E3. But man, that was just terrible presentation. With the whole technical difficulties thing. If they just had a normal press conference like everyone else, all of the traffic would be divided by the dozens of places live streaming the event. There wouldn't be those types of difficulties.

To Reggie's argument, it was different, and it wasn't better. It was a new way to surprise us, but it sure wasn't a delight. There was just a lack of live excitement that you could see with classic moments like The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess being unveiled. Can you really sit there and tell me that this year's E3 Nintendo Direct was better presented than this?

I gotta say, the Developer Directs were really cool and all, but we could've had a presentation AND those Directs. It's all about the games, yeah, but we can have a press conference, demos on the show floor, Developer Directs, AND Best Buy experiences all set up. And even pre-E3 directs like they had last year with Nonspecific Action Figure.

Nintendo is probably hard at work planning E3 2014 as we speak. We're still waiting for a Nonspecific Action Figure game, by the way. Get him in Super Smash Bros. 4, please.

Perhaps Nintendo became very uncomfortable with live events where things could go wrong, like the entirety of Peter Ong's existence during E3 2012's Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion presentation, where he was the ONLY non-Nintendo representative (besides Warren Spector who was up with Ong) during their E3 2012 press conferences. There is a REASON why DreamRift's website hasn't been updated in over a year SINCE that E3 2012 conference.

Could Peter Ong have single-handedly changed Nintendo's entire approach to E3 press conferences because of his spectacular failure?

Nintendo, the solution is not to throw out the baby with the bathwater. Just never invite Peter Ong on a stage ever again. You guys can't control anyone outside your company, we realize that. What does it matter if only Nintendo representatives speak at a Nintendo event? That's how it should be. Besides, that third-party reel in the E3 2012 Direct was pathetic anyway. There's no one outside Nintendo TO BE REPRESENTED. While we're at it, don't have Miyamoto speak without Bill Trinen nearby, please. He's senile no matter what language he speaks, so having a translator is doubly important.

The E3 2013 Community on Miiverse closed yesterday. That represents the finality of E3 2013. You could catch Ludwig elsewhere — by sheer luck, or you could just Follow him at NNID PrinceOfKoopas. That should make tracking down his off-KoopaTV brilliance quite easy.

Who won and lost E3 2013? Ludwig breaks it down here.
2014 is a whole new year. Nintendo did much better.
